Facilitator: Dandy Reader Nancy Sornson
Meeting on the 1st Tuesday of the Month at the shop @ 6:00
May 2, June 6, July 11*, August 1, Sept 5, Oct 3, Nov 7, and Dec 5
Our first book will be Irresistible by Adam Alter! In this revolutionary book, Alter, a professor of psychology and marketing at NYU, tracks the rise of behavioral addiction, and explains why so many of today's products are irresistible. Though these miraculous products melt the miles that separate people across the globe, their extraordinary and sometimes damaging magnetism is no accident. The companies that design these products tweak them over time until they become almost impossible to resist.
June's book will be The Mosquito: A Human History of Our Deadliest Predator by Timothy C. Winegard. No previous book has given the mosquito its due as a critical actor in the history of mankind. Why was gin and tonic the cocktail of choice for British colonists in India and Africa? What does Starbucks have to thank for its global domination? What has protected the lives of popes for millennia? Why did Scotland surrender its sovereignty to England? What was George Washington's secret weapon during the American Revolution? The answer to all these questions, and many more, is the mosquito.
Other titles to consider: Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, The Body by Bill Bryson, The Power of Geography by Tim Marshall, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor
All book club books will be available at the shop for purchase, but please feel free to borrow our selections from other readers or the library. Maybe you've even already read it! As members of the book club, you will receive a 15% discount on all book club books. We will try to select titles that are available in paperback.
